Germany 4 - Costa Rica 2

Paulo Wanchope scored a brace for the Costa Rican side, but his team lost the openning game of the World Cup to the host nation, Germany, being soundly beat 4-2.

Only 6 minutes had gone when Germany took the lead, with Paulo scoring his first goal six minutes further on. Miroslav Klose scored his own brace either side of the half, with the first coming shortly after on 17 minutes. The game looked secure on the 61 minute when Klose scored his second, but Wanchope gave the American's hope bringing the score back to 3-2 with twenty minutes to go. Germany, however, finished off the game on 87 minutes with Torsten Frings scoring the fourth and final goal for Germany.
